Ultrasonic flow meter

for open channel

flow measurement

The non-contact ultrasonic flow meters for open-channel measurement continuously monitor the water level, flow rate, and total flow of water in weirs, flumes, canals, and partially filled pipes. The flow can be continuously measured, displayed, totaled, and logged. Since the sensors do not come into contact with the medium, the meters require very little maintenance and are resistant to contamination.

In open-channel flow measurement, flow is measured noncontact in open channels or partially filled pipes. This method determines the water level and, depending on the measurement system, also the flow velocity. Based on these measured values and the channel geometry, the measuring device calculates the volumetric flow rate or the flow rate.

The measurement is performed without any moving parts in the medium and is therefore particularly suitable for wastewater, stormwater, industrial wastewater, and contaminated media.

  • Non-contact measurement: The ultrasonic sensor measures above the water surface without touching the medium.
  • Low-maintenance: No moving parts or parts submerged in the medium, resulting in minimal wear and reduced maintenance requirements.
  • Integrated data logging: Measurement values can be recorded and analyzed over the long term using the integrated data logger.
  • Flexible process integration: A 4–20 mA output, optional Modbus RTU communication, and programmable relays enable easy integration into existing systems.
  • Robust design; the IP66/NEMA 4X housing is suitable even for demanding environmental conditions.
  • Minimal process intrusion; no sensor installation in the water flow is required, thereby reducing deposits, contamination, and mechanical stress on the sensor.
